2nd Annual Casa Grande Comic Con 2016

the Casa Grande Dispatch Newspaper an article about Casa Grande Comic Con.

Melissa St. Aude Staff Writer & Valley Life Editor
Casa Grande Dispatch Newspaper Q & A UZA Founder Sydoney A.A. Banks.

 Q. Tell me a little bit about United Zombies of America - what's it all
about and how did it start?

A.  United Zombies of America (UZA) is a professional entertainment group that officially began in the spring of 2012.  We are actors/performers, artists, educators, jacks of many trades, so to say.  We are NOT just a monster/horror group, but we do many things and they may often involve monster-type characters and/or horror.  We really do so many things: photography, makeup, videos, classes/panels/workshops, improvisation, security, volunteering, social media, advertising and even more.  We support Anti-bulling and Paying It Forward.  We are a family friendly (all ages) group and we believe that “Families that Scare together Stay together!” UZA began because Sydoney Banks, founder of UZA, fell in love with horror and zombies through performing at “The Haunting Haunted House” in 2009/2010 with her family, Jess Acridge, his family, Casey Corbin, Kristen Cline, her family and others.  They all helped her find her passion and her purpose in life.  UZA began so she could explore her dreams and to assist others with theirs and to provide entertainment and fun for all.

 Q. Why are you participating in Casa Grande's Comic Con?

Did you take part last year as well?

Do you do other comic conventions as well?

A. This is our first time to participate in Casa Grande’s Comic Con.  Sydoney found it on Facebook and jumped at the chance to be involved with it.  UZA loves doing various types of cons, especially library comic cons.  UZA loves giving back to the community.  We have done the Tempe, Apache Junction, and Yuma Library Comic Cons as well as Amazing Arizona Con, Mad Monster, YumaCon and more.

 Q. What can people expect when they see your organization at Casa Grande's Comic Con? I understand you'll be doing makeup demonstrations?
Will zombies wander around the event as well?

A. UZA will be doing a makeup and SFX class at 3:15pm called “Bruises, Blisters, and Gore!”  This is a great beginner class for those interested in makeup for any kind of character or event.  We even had someone from a group that does emergency drill events come to get more information on how to do makeup on accident participants.

UZA will have a booth with our information and some other UZA favorites as well.  We will have UZA’s Ray Digger The Grave Digger wandering the comic con for free photos with any interested attendees.  Sydoney will have her cameras ready to take the free photos/videos and she will put them on Facebook after the comic con is over and after she edits them, so this may take her a day or two.  Be sure to get a flyer from Sydoney telling where you can retrieve your photo from and where you can share your own photos with us.

 Q. What is it about zombies that people find so entertaining?
Can you tell me a little bit about why you are interested in zombies?

A. Some of the reasons people may be interested in zombies could be that of all the monsters there are, they might be the most realistic, because they tend to occur from diseases, viruses, toxic spills, mutations, science experiments, attempting to reanimate the dead, and more.  So maybe we feel that it is more apt to happen futuristically to humans.  Haitian voodoo zombies have even been reported and written about.  There are books, comics, movies, games, video games, cartoons, toys, clothing, and television shows that portray zombies for our entertainment.  Some people enjoy being frightened while others enjoy frightening them.  This year on July 4, AMC with Greg Nicotero opened, “The Walking Dead Experience” at Universal Studios in California.  They created it so people could feel what it is like to face zombies at specific places from the show.  Sydoney really wants to go and experience this attraction for herself.
Sydoney never really felt anything for any monsters or horror growing up and she did not know much about any of them either, because she did not grow up watching them.  She did love Halloween, the costumes and decorations, even more than the candy.

During her first haunted house acting role she began learning more about monsters, horror, haunted houses, and cons and she continues to keep learning more about the entire industry to this day.  She was only 15 years old and assigned as the lead zombie, graveyard lead and trainer for the graveyard and all the zombies.  She even won “Actress of the Season” for 2009/2010.  She has done other haunted houses each year since then including, “Rob Zombies Great American Nightmare” in 2014.  She now loves zombies and working in haunted houses.  She hopes to run her own haunted attraction.  She would love for it to be open throughout the entire year.

Horror is great, but UZA is so much more!

Please come by and see us at Casa Grande’s Comic Con
 on Saturday, July 19, 2016.

Thank you for interviewing UZA!  We would love to meet all of you and get a photo with you and Ray Digger at the Comic Con.

Talk Nerdy to Me: a Byte of Burlesque

UZA Zombies in a Burlesque Show?  18+
Who would have ever thought of zombies being in a burlesque show, huh!  Yes, it is true, we got the privilege of working with one the most professional groups we have ever met, "BurlEscapades".  We did not dance in the act, but we did get to do what zombies do best - DIE!  Even though some of our zombies may have some pretty good dance moves, we left the dancing to the professionals.

We had a blast and this was the second time we had the honor of doing this performance number of "Resident Evil" with "BurlEscapades', Sable Switch".  "BurlEscapades" is a wonderful and entertaining group of hardworking and amazing talent.  "Sable Switch" is so very outstanding and she is just Out Of This World!

We had such an exhilarating night at PCC, "Talk Nerdy to Me: a Byte of Burlesque".
It was so fabulous to get to do this number with "Sable Switch", to be honest, we were really quite sad when it was over, because we had such a great time performing with her.  It was very fun and we hope to be able to do more with the lively engaging group, "BurlEscapades".

We Love You, "Sable Switch" and "BurlEscapades"!

UZA loves Yuma, Arizona!  We went there on a trip a couple of months ago.  It is a small town, but it is quaint, friendly, interesting, multicultural, agricultural, nature friendly, beautiful, historical, entertaining, FUN and there is something for everyone to see and do.  Do not shortchange Yuma just because it is small.  You might even want to stay a couple of days/nights to get a chance to take in everything and enjoy the peace and quiet you can find there as well.

Yuma Territorial Prison
State Historic Park

Picture
Picture
Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park Is one of the coolest places UZA has ever been to.  This Historic Prison is really one of a kind and just so amazing to see.  The history and background of the Prison is so amazing.  The Dark Cell is one of the best parts of the whole experience.  You walk in and feel the energy and can feel that you are not alone in there.  Founder Syd was taking photo's and her camera kept dying and as soon as Syd left the Dark Cell her camera would start working again.  The Theater that they show the short video on about the Prison was the most creepy part.  The feeling you get in there is just so odd.  In the Theater she even heard weird music and sounds and she really felt like she was not alone in there, and it was as if someone was watching you.
UZA would recommend that you should be sure to go visit the Prison in Yuma, Arizona!

Yuma Gateway Park on the Colorado River is such a beautiful spot to just sit and relax.  Gateway Park is a great place for photo's and is just breath-taking and not far from the Prison.  Make sure to stop by, see, and drive on

"Ocean To Ocean" Highway!

UZA Zombie Attack Live Game - Blackout

Yes it is true UZA Zombie Attack Live Game -Blackout is coming to LibraryCON!
We are so very excite to be Re Re Opening it at LibraryCON 2016! Unfortunately we can not do the ALL NEW Blackout because it has to be at night in the dark. We will have Light's, Music, Fog, Zombies and Fun! We might even have dancing zombies! Make sure to bring your dancing shoes and zombie stabilizing skills!   I hope you are all ready for UZA Zombie Attack!

www.facebook.com/UnitedZombiesofAmericaZombieAttackGame

We also created our own “ZOMBIE ATTACK” game also known as “Plants VS Zombies” at Comicon 2012 and 2013. UZA Zombie Attack is a game that travels throughout Arizona. It can be scary or “family friendly” for kids or scaredy cats. Game description: Zombie Attack is an interactive game. Outside of a big tent you stand behind caution tape. Zombies come at you from inside the tent. You have to "Stabilize" the Zombies by throwing balls at them, before they get to you. We can make the game as easy or as hard as you want it to be. Depending on the time of day and the location played at there can be lights and fog inside the tent. The lights go to music that is used for the game and for the time waiting between games. The entire game has music you play to and it comes with a soundtrack made for the game and its own DJ.

Going with UZA and Sponsoring

Please support all of our friends and sponsors who help make this possible. It take a lot of blood, sweat and tears to put any kind of event on. Please thank them and support them
Thanks you also much!

UZA and Synyster Syn Founder, Sydoney A.A. Banks
is going to school to become a cosmetologist.

This whole school thing is all very new and different to me.  I know it is not easy, but I know that not anything that is worth having is always easy to attain.  I am scared most of the time of failing and not being good at cosmetology, but I do not want to give up because I am not a quitter.  I have seen so many people just quit and give up on their life, their dreams, their goals and so much more.  I know, I do not want to be like them and always have regrets and feel like a failure in life.  School is tough and it is a lot to take in and understand especially when you have a learning disability.  When you have a learning disability, everything is a lot more difficult to grasp and understand it is not easy and I have to work very hard at it.  If you have any kind of learning disability, it does not mean that you are in anyway less intelligent than anyone else it just means that you learn differently.  I still have problems with that, because I forget that others learn easier than I do and that I learn differently than they do, so I feel less intelligent even though I may be more intelligent than others who have fewer or no problems learning things.  In school, it is hard to see others getting good grades and doing really well, and I am barely passing, but I have to remember that I am working 20 times harder because my brain processes how I do things differently.  I am happy for my fellow students and I am amazed on how well they do what they do.  I just have to remember what my goal is and how to hold on to it and keep on trucking.  I have to remember and understand that I cannot compare myself to them, I can only compare me to myself and try to keep improving and doing better than I did the last time I attempted to do whatever it is that I am now doing.  I love my current school, the fantastic staff, the students, and the class I am in, they are all amazing.  My teacher is really one of a kind, very old school yet up on how we all learn in varied ways, and I am so very thankful for her.  This is a big step on my way to my dreams and I cannot let anyone stop me, including myself.  I had a fun time with the last hair show competition it was fun and different for me.  I did the makeup and I have never done anything like that before, so it was stressful and scary, but I did it and it all came out very good.  I was not 100% happy with it, but there is always room for improvement.  The fact is I did it, I had fun, and I learned from it.  I know that by pushing yourself, it is the only way to be challenged and to improve yourself.  Try new things and be opened up to the unknown. My team was amazing and we did a terrific job.
I am so proud of all of us.

The founder and head makeup artist at United Zombies of America, Sydoney Banks, and her amazing team of three other students entered a Student Hair Show and Competition at their cosmetology school.  They did a wonderful job and everyone at UZA and Synyster Syn are so proud of them for the courage and talents they showed in their attempt to compete as new students with only two weeks of school to consider for their attempt as well as their former outside knowledge they had.  They took a big chance by entering the competition but they went for it anyway.  They put in their time, money, effort, work, worry, fear, blood, sweat and tears as well as their laughter and love for each other and fun.  They had a great time learning and experimenting as well as they gained a lot from the bonding experience formed from this opportunity. Sadly, they did not win, but in a way, they really did, just by attempting so early in their training. Good Job - Team Hallway Crew! (their team name)

Hair Show
by Sydoney Banks

I am so proud of my team and we did amazing.
We were scared and nervous and we did not fit in with the other contestants, but we did it anyway.
I am so glad we did it because we did learn a lot and we had a fun time. I knew we were not going to win because the school would not get our style choice and that is okay.  A lot of underdogs and outcasts do become someone when their time is right like Tim Burton, Walt Disney and many more. To be honest Tim Burton was one of our biggest inspirations for the hair show.  I am a big Tim Burton fan.  We were picked on and made fun of by other students but you keep going and never let those bullies win.  I myself have been picked on my whole life but I do not let it stop me.  When watching my team work with me and come out and walk the runway I got so nervous and felt this warm happy feeling and I started to cry a little.  I almost never cry and I don't like to cry especially in front of people.  I was so proud, not just of myself, but mostly my team and how far we have come so far together in this. My main thing here - is to always follow your dreams and step out of your comfort zone so you can push yourself forward to become better. Never let rude and uncaring bullies stop you or get in your way, keep going on, one step at a time, and rise above them. The whole hair show thing was quite an experience and it was emotional, scary, and a rollercoaster.  I would do it all over again exactly the same.
This whole cosmetology thing is all new for me and very scary. I know I will do fine and just have to keep at it. When I first started haunted houses and SFX makeup it was scary and new to me also. Now student and soon to be cosmetologist Sydoney A.A. Banks.

T'was The Fright Before Christmas at Yuma Nightmares

Yuma Nightmares is a haunted house and they do a killer Christmas event to.

Yuma Nightmares is doing a Christmas Inspired by Disney's A Nightmare Before Christmas. This is so cool we are even going to try to go down and see it.
I would say this is a must go to event! Visit them at
15485 South Avenue 4E Yuma, AZ (4E and County 15½)

Like Yuma Nightmares on Facebook
This is from there website!

 Re-Opening, December 2015!
Come see our kid friendly INTERACTIVE Haunted House walk-through
Christmas display Inspired by Disney's Nightmare Before Christmas!

Here is Yuma Nightmares history right from there website

www.yumanightmares.com

www.facebook.com/yuma.nightmares

The Haunted House had a modest beginning in 2001 in Camelot Apartments with one person in a costume.  We then moved to Sierra Sunset behind Cibola High School and progressed to a banquet table scene full of homemade mannequins with movie icons enjoying the dinner and I (Mark) pushed all the different animatronic gadgets with my finger or triggered them with a flashlight while patrons toured the “Haunted House” in 2002.  At this point, the Haunted House was located in a small front yard.

In 2003, a permanent maze was built in the garage, which lengthened the haunted house and gave us plenty of room to scare people.  Unfortunately, this made it difficult to do laundry as one would have to exit the kitchen door and walk through a maze to get to the washer and dryer, which was quite comical.  The Haunt grew over the next two years to cover most of the front yard, driveway, garage maze, and the roof utilizing 8-10 actors to provide scares.

We then decided to move to a bigger and better location, because on Halloween night there were four blocks of parking tied up to get to the “Boogeyman Bungalo”. So, we ended up at our current residence on the corner of 4E and County 15½ which covers a little over 2½ acres.  This new haunt was renamed Yuma Nightmares Haunted House.  The current Haunted House takes up approximately 1 acre now.  We will probably keep the actual size of the haunted house to 1 acre as it takes 50 actors a night to cover all the areas adequately.  With the extra room we put up a 2,000 square foot tent-like structure which was a lot of fun, but we broke it down after two years in favor of a more code friendly open air environment.  We have grown over 300 different plants in our desert lot to transform it into more of a park-like/cemetery-like environment which provides us with all kinds of fun shadows and creepy places to hide in.

For the last five years, we also expanded to a Christmas event initially named “The Haunted Holiday” as we were trying to recreate what Disney was doing with their Haunted Mansion Holiday in the winter.  I strongly recommend you visit their event which runs from September to early January.

Now our event utilizes 100 to 200 volunteers to fill the 50 positions per night needed to run an event this size.  Our set design is improved upon each year and our costumes become more elaborate with each season.  Again we are always looking for fun and energetic/motivated people become part of our core group of actors.  Please come out and see what people are talking about!

Sincerely,
Mark Plante P.T.

United Zombies of America and UZA Synyster Syn had such a fun time at YumaCon! It was one of the best Comic cons we have been to.  It  was well organized and was Fun for the whole Family!
The staff of YumaCon was helpful and pleasant and the attendees were also kind and fun to be around!  This con was far greater then Phoenix Comic Con. We would highly recommend it to everyone to go next year and the following years to come. Keep up the great work YumaCon (remember bigger isn't always better)!  To be honest the smaller non-mainstream cons are more personable with the vendors, guests, staff, and attendees of the con which is better and way more fun and worth the money.  I like the one on one time with the vendors and guests and the less congestion and overcrowding of these cons.  Yumacon,  Amazing Arizona Con and Mad Monster Con are some of our favorite c
onventions to attend because
they are smaller and care more about the overall experience for everyone and are
not all about numbers and money!

Great Job YumaCon!!

UZA had 2 classes/workshops/panels: "Bruises, Blisters, and Gore" along with "Making Monsters".  They were both successful and lots of fun for all!  We had a blast at the "Bruises, Blisters, and Gore" class and we met some amazing artists.  We had fun and we were asked some really great questions, we loved it!  Hey, Yuma just because we are in Phoenix does not mean you cannot learn more from us.  We can teach you through video, media, and technology, that most of us have now.  We would love to teach you more or help you out with anything you are interested in, if we can.  At the "Making Monsters" class we had a wonderful time with you kiddos and your families.  We loved working with each of you and being able to see what you made come to life in class.  You were able to amaze us with your talents and we hope you all keep up with the fun of theater and the art of acting.  Hey, any of you wanting to keep on developing your inner monster, can ask us any questions and also keep learning with us via video, media, and technology.  We had so much fun and we are so grateful for this amazing opportunity to get to meet all of you.  We love you guys and want to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts and that it was a honor and pleasure to get to work with each of you!  Plan to see you again next year!

Jack and Jill's Haunted Hill 2015 Best Haunted Attractions In AZ

11/6/2015

Picture
Jack and Jill's Haunted Hill Haunted House has finished the 2015 season.  United Zombies of America and Synyster Syn have voted Jack and Jill's Haunted Hill the “Best Haunted Attraction in Arizona” for 2015!  Jack and Jill's Haunted Hill remains true to their story line and it was an incredibly scary haunted house.  They have amazing sets, intense actors, and it feels real and the makeup was on point.  You feel like you are a part of the story or that you are in a horror movie.  What a nightmare and an out of this world haunted house - it really is a one of a kind and very different.  Congratulations go to Jack and Jill's Haunted Hill!

You begin to go up the stairs to the mines and they are just down right creepy and dark, as you also get lost.  The only way out is to follow the lanterns and with that you have creepy miners talking to you and just creeping you out.  Then you go into the forest where the terrifying forest monsters lurk.  Next, you happen onto a creepy, scary, odd, old man sitting on the front porch waiting to greet you.  The beginning of this cursed house has you go into a living room and then to a dark hallway that leads to a messed up doctor’s darkroom.  The doctor is one scary yet smart mad man.  After you survive the doctor’s room, if you do, you go on to the cages where there are poor souls being held for some unknown messed up reason.  Man, this place is just messed up and it worsens as you come into the bathroom and I will just say that you will really need to use the bathroom from the horror you have just witnessed of the girls in there or are they girls, well whatever they are, they are horrifying.  Next, you come down a hallway to the kitchen and meet up with a large psycho-killer in full on action getting ready for a kill, but then you run out of there and you think it cannot get any worse and it for sure does.  Now you come into a room that you will never forget, where there are victims forced to eat people by some nasty, sick, crazy women.  Then you go down the stairs with the help of this maniacal freak into the dark to meet up with some large, creepy, scary dudes and then on to the torture room where there is just madness and horror as you push through the bodies then you are chased out, if you make it out!

It was a blast to go through with friends and to see what happened to Jack and Jill as you watch them get scared and have a good time as well.  The actors are really committed to their art and they are very good at what they do and how they do it!

There are no animatronics, just wonderful actors and awesome sets and it is way worth the money and time you get to spend while there!  There are other cool things to see and do while you wait indoors before you get to enter the haunt, so make sure to put this on next year’s calendar 2016 for fun and fright.

This was not just another haunted house, but there was also music, dancing, games, food and Go-karting to experience and enjoy.  So much fun, for everyone!
