Banks Epic Home Haunts is a documentary showcasing the terrifying talent lurking next door, epic people creating the world's most epic Halloween Haunts in their own backyards! www.epichomehaunts.com This documentary was very insightful and educational. The footage was educational and interesting and being able to see all the different Haunts from the film jumping one to another. I love documentaries or any kind of video that highlights The Haunted Attraction Industry. I love how they refer to Haunts as artwork because it more often than not contains spectacular artwork of one form or many others. It got me thinking of how true that is, and how most people would not see or believe that, but it is true just ask those who create the reality by art and performances. It takes so much to create and to man a haunt including the skill, time, effort, energy, creativity, persistence, hard work, blood, sweat, tears, anxiety, recruiting, and money to mention a few necessities that do go into these haunts to make them a reality if even just for one night a year. They work all year on planning, purchasing, designing, building and creating these awesome walkthrough sets with so much heart, detail, and work it is absolutely beautiful and inspiring to see and to dream of creating one for your own. Some haunters, have had little or no experience in making Professional Haunt sets or they have been doing it for years since they were young. It takes all types of people to just do it and make it look like they have been doing it for years and even like something Disney or Universal Studios. Some are even self-taught so watch youtube or look for help on the world wide web. I love hearing the stories and getting to learn about some of these amazing haunters and what they do, what they been through with some of their struggles, how they got started, and how they love what they do, and are so driven and committed to their craft. I really liked how they showed they are human just like you and me and how these haunters are kind, caring individuals and are not some kind of evil, horrific monsters. It nice to see the humanity they show and how most of them have even helped charities in their community. Sadly, there are some "Haunts" that are what they call "extreme haunts" and they are not at all the same or anything remotely like any well-done responsible Haunted Attraction; they are more intense, hardcore, involve actual touching and they may even cause patrons actual harm -- they are not the same as haunts done for fun for all. Some of these "extreme haunts" are giving regular Haunts a bad name and making a negative name on the haunt industry. This Documentary is one of my favorites and I admire and look up to these amazing Haunters and everything they do! You wonderful talented Haunters are amazing and inspiring to young Haunters like me and I am so grateful for all you have done and do! You all make a positive impact on your community and I would even say the world. I wish the AZ community was more like your communities. A fair bit of AZ is not as friendly and accepting and helpful to other haunters, but maybe it can and hopefully it will change and become more welcoming and accepting to all who wish to haunt responsibly. Speaking of young Haunters, I love the young man who is living his dream and doing what he loves and seeing what the future has for haunts. It was nice to see the other seasoned haunters talk about him and what he is doing and how he is the future and how with technology and everything we have now available that the industry going to change and take off even more. I do hope some of the old tricks and ways used before will stay as well. It is great to see this young man and to hear his parents talk about him and how proud they are and how they support him. I hope more parents see this and if their kids are the same, that they will hopefully help and support there kids choices and dreams whether they wish to be a haunter or something else it is what they want to be. I thought that was put in a good place in the documentary -- towards the end -- to end it with the future. I started doing haunts at 15 years old and now I am in my twenties and my life's dream and goal is to have a haunted attraction and use it to make a difference in the world, like Sydney Neal did with Rocky Point Haunted House for over 20 years and the one haunt that saved my life was in AZ called "The Haunting Haunted House". I hope everyone that sees this documentary will learn more about haunts and how much goes into them and how not all Haunters are mean, evil, scary, out to get rich people, but kind, caring, out for fun for all, gifted people like you and the only difference is that they truly LOVE Halloween and they are amazing people. The only thing that I could say that needs improvement in this documentary is the inclusiveness and the diversity of haunts in this state and even in other states in the USA showing more of the differences in the United States and in the communities in those states. That is the only thing I think would be great to see, so I hope there will be a next time including more diversity. So if you have not seen Epic Home Haunts please do; it is a must see and who knows -- you might even get bit by the haunt bug yourself. Happy Haunting! I give it a 10 out of 10. -Syd ALL NEW FREE SERVICE!

Here are some tips from a haunted house actor about the etiquette and common sense of going through a haunted house. http://www.wikihow.com/Avoid-Ticking-Off-the-Actors-in-a-Haunted-House Don't bother trying to act tough, we know you're scared. And pretending you aren't scared or trying to act smart just wastes your money, not ours. Be sure you really want to go through the house- there's nothing worse than a customer who keeps their eyes and ears covered, or runs. Make sure you won't react poorly to the environment. Fog machines and strobe lights are often used. Keep this and any medical conditions that could be aggravated by this in mind. Do not come if you are drunk or under the influence of drugs. You won't have fun, your friends won't have fun, the actors won't have fun, and you could be a danger to yourself or others. If there are rules, listen to them. Even if it is not explicitly mentioned, do NOT touch the actors. This is liable to get you thrown out, and possibly arrested. Unless they are unprofessional, actors are unlikely to break character, regardless of how many devastatingly witty one-liners you come up with. You might think it's hilarious to ask for an actor's phone number, or to comment on how hot they are. Trust me, it's not. Do not hang out in an actor's scene and refuse to move until the actor is forced to break character to get you out. This is not funny. This ruins the experience for the people behind you and forces the actor to break rules. Stating that you aren't frightened indicates to the actors that you are. If you see an actor peeking out from behind a curtain, it is probably because they WANTED to be seen. Saying "ha, I can see you!" doesn't prove that you're clever. Pushing aside curtains in search of actors waiting to scare you ruins the scare. Do not do this. It's not your job to scare people, it's the actor's. Let them do their jobs. Do not try to scare the actors. This will almost certainly not work, and you'll look like a prat. Do not touch props. Do not play with props. Do not move props. Do not attempt to steal props. If you find yourself too afraid to continue, request to be taken out. Do not ask to be taken out unless you genuinely want to leave the house. A false chicken out will only irritate actors who have to break character to escort you out. Asking an actor to not scare you will often not work. In fact, it will only encourage them to scare you more. If you are truly frightened, chicken out. Do not force your companions to stay if they are frightened. Try to have some fun when you walk through. Having no fun ruins the experience for everyone. Running in a haunted house can be dangerous and destructive. Try to avoid it. Do not walk slowly or dawdle. Try to keep an average walking pace. This will ensure that you won't clump up into big groups with the people behind you, which leads to less scares for everyone. Come in smaller groups (2-4 is usually good). This makes you more manageable and easier to keep track of in the house. The longer you wait at the end of a hallway or in a doorway being frightened or debating about who goes first, the more time the actors have to prepare to scare you. When you leave the house don't warn waiting customers about what it might hold. That's kind of like telling people the end of a movie that they're waiting in line to see. Don't take photos or video tape when you walk through. This really destroys it for others. Posting on Facebook, Instagram, or anywhere else really destroys it for those that want to enjoy, and hurts those that took the time to create this art form. It also causes the actors to have no vision for a few minutes...making our job rather difficult. If you do happen to know one of the actors personally, don't yell out their name or ask/mention any personal information or upcoming plans to meet. Again, this ruins the experience for anyone else in front or behind you. It also ruins the scare actor's experience. Many hours of rehearsal have been put into your one walk through. Plus it could be of concern to give out actor's names. Leaving the group you are with to hide and try to scare them is not only rude to the performers, it can hold its own dangers. There are electrical cords and other items that are intentionally set out of the way to not be a hazard to guests. By straying off the path, you may be putting yourself in harm's way or get lost. If you see an actor setting up a scare for someone in your group, don't try to 'help.' You're probably not as clever as you believe and your friend probably isn't as stupid as you think. Telling them, 'look over there' and pointing at the stalking actor is tantamount to saying, 'hey, there's a monster over there getting ready to scare you.' Tips When planning to attend a Haunted House think about your attire. Close toed shoes are a better option (sneakers, etc). With all the jumping by yourself or your group, toes often get stepped on. There may also be items you can stub your toes on. If you do go through more than once, don't be obnoxious about how much you now know about the house. Try to enjoy it as you would a new house. If an actor tells you something, such as "Wait", "Move faster", "Wrong way" etc. , listen to them. Be aware of when a house closes. If it closes at, say, midnight, do not show up at midnight. The actors will be preparing to leave, and the house will probably already be shut down. A haunted house is usually only as scary as the surprises that it holds. Going through more than once can ruin the experience for you and the actors, unless you are respectful on your subsequent ventures and are there to appreciate the things you might have missed the first time through. Remember, most actors, this is their JOB. As you are leaving their room, or the whole park for that matter, tell the ticket booth who did a good job. It makes the "monsters" feel appreciated and will continue to do better. Making fun of actors or attempting to break their character is neither witty nor amusing. Don't try to be a tough guy. Don't be insulting to and/or hit the actor because they scared you. You paid money for them to do that. If you can't handle it, stay home. Don't tell actors "stop scaring my kid(s)". If you think your kids can't handle it don't go in. If your kids can't handle it chicken out. You ruin everyone in the groups good time as well as the actors good clean fun when you get angry for forcing your child into something they can't handle. Most houses will allow you to request a "low" scare or a "high" scare if you feel the need. Please do not request a low scare unless you've got small children with you, and do not request a high scare if you can not handle it. Warnings As stated above, do not touch the actors. Do not hit the actors. Do not kick, push, bite, slap, lick, scratch or otherwise assault actors. The same goes for mannequins, which could be an actor pretending to be fake. Don't bring flashlights. Bringing flashlights ruin the whole effect that most houses often try to create. It spoils the thrill for not only you, but your entire group. Do not run. You could destroy the house or hurt yourself and others. If you are prone to striking out when frightened, do not go through a haunted house. The actors do not want to be punched in the face for doing their jobs any more than you do. If you meant to do it or not doesn't matter. If you can't control yourself, then stay home. Some "hitters" find that keeping their hands in their pockets can keep them from reflexively lashing out. You might see if that works, but do so before you go. Unless you yourself are on fire, no smoking in the house. www.hauntworld.comwww.hauntworld.comthe Casa Grande Dispatch Newspaper an article about Casa Grande Comic Con. Melissa St. Aude Staff Writer & Valley Life Editor Casa Grande Dispatch Newspaper Q & A UZA Founder Sydoney A.A. Banks. Q. Tell me a little bit about United Zombies of America - what's it all about and how did it start? A. United Zombies of America (UZA) is a professional entertainment group that officially began in the spring of 2012. We are actors/performers, artists, educators, jacks of many trades, so to say. We are NOT just a monster/horror group, but we do many things and they may often involve monster-type characters and/or horror. We really do so many things: photography, makeup, videos, classes/panels/workshops, improvisation, security, volunteering, social media, advertising and even more. We support Anti-bulling and Paying It Forward. We are a family friendly (all ages) group and we believe that “Families that Scare together Stay together!” UZA began because Sydoney Banks, founder of UZA, fell in love with horror and zombies through performing at “The Haunting Haunted House” in 2009/2010 with her family, Jess Acridge, his family, Casey Corbin, Kristen Cline, her family and others. They all helped her find her passion and her purpose in life. UZA began so she could explore her dreams and to assist others with theirs and to provide entertainment and fun for all. Q. Why are you participating in Casa Grande's Comic Con? Did you take part last year as well? Do you do other comic conventions as well? A. This is our first time to participate in Casa Grande’s Comic Con. Sydoney found it on Facebook and jumped at the chance to be involved with it. UZA loves doing various types of cons, especially library comic cons. UZA loves giving back to the community. We have done the Tempe, Apache Junction, and Yuma Library Comic Cons as well as Amazing Arizona Con, Mad Monster, YumaCon and more. Q. What can people expect when they see your organization at Casa Grande's Comic Con? I understand you'll be doing makeup demonstrations? Will zombies wander around the event as well? A. UZA will be doing a makeup and SFX class at 3:15pm called “Bruises, Blisters, and Gore!” This is a great beginner class for those interested in makeup for any kind of character or event. We even had someone from a group that does emergency drill events come to get more information on how to do makeup on accident participants. UZA will have a booth with our information and some other UZA favorites as well. We will have UZA’s Ray Digger The Grave Digger wandering the comic con for free photos with any interested attendees. Sydoney will have her cameras ready to take the free photos/videos and she will put them on Facebook after the comic con is over and after she edits them, so this may take her a day or two. Be sure to get a flyer from Sydoney telling where you can retrieve your photo from and where you can share your own photos with us. Q. What is it about zombies that people find so entertaining? Can you tell me a little bit about why you are interested in zombies? A. Some of the reasons people may be interested in zombies could be that of all the monsters there are, they might be the most realistic, because they tend to occur from diseases, viruses, toxic spills, mutations, science experiments, attempting to reanimate the dead, and more. So maybe we feel that it is more apt to happen futuristically to humans. Haitian voodoo zombies have even been reported and written about. There are books, comics, movies, games, video games, cartoons, toys, clothing, and television shows that portray zombies for our entertainment. Some people enjoy being frightened while others enjoy frightening them. This year on July 4, AMC with Greg Nicotero opened, “The Walking Dead Experience” at Universal Studios in California. They created it so people could feel what it is like to face zombies at specific places from the show. Sydoney really wants to go and experience this attraction for herself. Sydoney never really felt anything for any monsters or horror growing up and she did not know much about any of them either, because she did not grow up watching them. She did love Halloween, the costumes and decorations, even more than the candy. During her first haunted house acting role she began learning more about monsters, horror, haunted houses, and cons and she continues to keep learning more about the entire industry to this day. She was only 15 years old and assigned as the lead zombie, graveyard lead and trainer for the graveyard and all the zombies. She even won “Actress of the Season” for 2009/2010. She has done other haunted houses each year since then including, “Rob Zombies Great American Nightmare” in 2014. She now loves zombies and working in haunted houses. She hopes to run her own haunted attraction. She would love for it to be open throughout the entire year. Horror is great, but UZA is so much more! Please come by and see us at Casa Grande’s Comic Con on Saturday, July 19, 2016. Thank you for interviewing UZA! The founder and head makeup artist at United Zombies of America, Sydoney Banks, and her amazing team of three other students entered a Student Hair Show and Competition at their cosmetology school. They did a wonderful job and everyone at UZA and Synyster Syn are so proud of them for the courage and talents they showed in their attempt to compete as new students with only two weeks of school to consider for their attempt as well as their former outside knowledge they had. They took a big chance by entering the competition but they went for it anyway. They put in their time, money, effort, work, worry, fear, blood, sweat and tears as well as their laughter and love for each other and fun. They had a great time learning and experimenting as well as they gained a lot from the bonding experience formed from this opportunity. Sadly, they did not win, but in a way, they really did, just by attempting so early in their training. Good Job - Team Hallway Crew! (their team name) For more photos click on me..... Hair Show by Sydoney Banks I am so proud of my team and we did amazing. We were scared and nervous and we did not fit in with the other contestants, but we did it anyway. I am so glad we did it because we did learn a lot and we had a fun time. I knew we were not going to win because the school would not get our style choice and that is okay. A lot of underdogs and outcasts do become someone when their time is right like Tim Burton, Walt Disney and many more. To be honest Tim Burton was one of our biggest inspirations for the hair show. I am a big Tim Burton fan. We were picked on and made fun of by other students but you keep going and never let those bullies win. I myself have been picked on my whole life but I do not let it stop me. When watching my team work with me and come out and walk the runway I got so nervous and felt this warm happy feeling and I started to cry a little. I almost never cry and I don't like to cry especially in front of people. I was so proud, not just of myself, but mostly my team and how far we have come so far together in this. My main thing here - is to always follow your dreams and step out of your comfort zone so you can push yourself forward to become better. Never let rude and uncaring bullies stop you or get in your way, keep going on, one step at a time, and rise above them. The whole hair show thing was quite an experience and it was emotional, scary, and a rollercoaster. I would do it all over again exactly the same. This whole cosmetology thing is all new for me and very scary. I know I will do fine and just have to keep at it. When I first started haunted houses and SFX makeup it was scary and new to me also. Now student and soon to be cosmetologist Sydoney A.A. Banks. Avalon School of Cosmetology

Yuma Nightmares is doing a Christmas Inspired by Disney's A Nightmare Before Christmas. This is so cool we are even going to try to go down and see it. I would say this is a must go to event! Visit them at 15485 South Avenue 4E Yuma, AZ (4E and County 15½) Like Yuma Nightmares on Facebook This is from there website! www.yumanightmares.com Re-Opening, December 2015! Come see our kid friendly INTERACTIVE Haunted House walk-through Christmas display Inspired by Disney's Nightmare Before Christmas! Here is Yuma Nightmares history right from there website www.yumanightmares.com www.facebook.com/yuma.nightmares The Haunted House had a modest beginning in 2001 in Camelot Apartments with one person in a costume. We then moved to Sierra Sunset behind Cibola High School and progressed to a banquet table scene full of homemade mannequins with movie icons enjoying the dinner and I (Mark) pushed all the different animatronic gadgets with my finger or triggered them with a flashlight while patrons toured the “Haunted House” in 2002. At this point, the Haunted House was located in a small front yard. In 2003, a permanent maze was built in the garage, which lengthened the haunted house and gave us plenty of room to scare people. Unfortunately, this made it difficult to do laundry as one would have to exit the kitchen door and walk through a maze to get to the washer and dryer, which was quite comical. The Haunt grew over the next two years to cover most of the front yard, driveway, garage maze, and the roof utilizing 8-10 actors to provide scares. We then decided to move to a bigger and better location, because on Halloween night there were four blocks of parking tied up to get to the “Boogeyman Bungalo”. So, we ended up at our current residence on the corner of 4E and County 15½ which covers a little over 2½ acres. This new haunt was renamed Yuma Nightmares Haunted House. The current Haunted House takes up approximately 1 acre now. We will probably keep the actual size of the haunted house to 1 acre as it takes 50 actors a night to cover all the areas adequately. With the extra room we put up a 2,000 square foot tent-like structure which was a lot of fun, but we broke it down after two years in favor of a more code friendly open air environment. We have grown over 300 different plants in our desert lot to transform it into more of a park-like/cemetery-like environment which provides us with all kinds of fun shadows and creepy places to hide in. For the last five years, we also expanded to a Christmas event initially named “The Haunted Holiday” as we were trying to recreate what Disney was doing with their Haunted Mansion Holiday in the winter. I strongly recommend you visit their event which runs from September to early January. Now our event utilizes 100 to 200 volunteers to fill the 50 positions per night needed to run an event this size. Our set design is improved upon each year and our costumes become more elaborate with each season. Again we are always looking for fun and energetic/motivated people become part of our core group of actors. Please come out and see what people are talking about! Sincerely, Mark Plante P.T. www.facebook.com/yuma.nightmares www.yumanightmares.com |
